Known for its balance of savory or fruity flavors, tangy citrus notes, and spice, the michelada is as much about personal expression as it is about flavor, with each combination reflecting regional preferences and individual taste.

What began as a celebration of the classic michelada with Chelada Especial has grown into the No. 1 ready-to-drink Chelada brand in the U.S.1 Today, Modelo Chelada continues to be a dynamic brand that brings something distinct to every table and every moment that calls for more flavor.
“We’ve brought Mexican authenticity and craftsmanship to the flavor category with Modelo Chelada—recruiting new drinkers to the Modelo brand while staying true to the brand’s core values and evolving to resonate with new generations,” said Logan Jensen, Vice President of Brand Marketing, Casa Modelo.

The Modelo Chelada brand's journey began in 2013 with the launch of Chelada Especial, an accessible take on the beloved Mexican michelada. Crafted with a blend of tomato, lime, and salt, and paired with authentic Mexican beer, this staple started what would soon become a dynamic chelada portfolio.

“It was the first time we explored flavored beer, and it became the beginning of something much bigger,” says Jazmín Solis, Product and Consumer Science Director.
That single innovation laid the foundation for a nine-flavor lineup that includes both savory and fruit-forward profiles, from the rich, smooth Negra con Chile to the bright, sweet Fresa Picante, both of which launched in 2025. The portfolio now spans multiple formats, including 24 oz. singles and 12 oz. multi-packs, as well as non-alcoholic and higher ABV options so consumers can be choiceful about their desired consumption, offering a chelada for nearly every taste and occasion.
“Our approach is simple,” says Jazmín. “We respect the origin and continue to evolve the portfolio with flavors that feel both true and new.”

“When we innovate, we stay true to our Mexican roots, creating new flavors that we actually see resonating in Mexico and predominantly Mexican American markets in the U.S.,” says Swathi Rao, Brand Director, Modelo Chelada & Innovation. “Our portfolio has something for everyone.”
The innovation journey typically begins with an exploration of emerging culinary influences and market preferences. The team partners closely with expert flavorists to test prototypes, refine sensory experiences, and strike the ideal balance between sweet, spicy, tangy, and savory complexity. From traditional michelada-style blends to bold new twists like Sandía Picante, each Modelo Chelada goes through multiple development phases and rigorous consumer testing to ensure it resonates across cultures and occasions.
This intentionality has led to a portfolio that offers something for every kind of chelada drinker, whether they’re reaching for a classic like Chelada Especial or exploring the sweet heat of Mango y Chile for the first time.
Expanding Occasions with Strategic, Intentional Innovation
One of the most significant innovation launches for the brand happened this past spring with the introduction of Modelo Chelada Suprema – the first high-ABV offerings within the Modelo brand family that reflect the increasing interest in higher-proof, flavor-forward beverages.

Available in Mangonada, a mix of mango and chamoy flavors, and Tropical, a blend of guava and pineapple flavors, Suprema builds on the flavor equity of the core Chelada portfolio, while introducing a new drinking experience.
“This was a multi-year journey in development and exploration for what is next for the Chelada family,” says Wade Coffin, Senior Manager of Beer Innovation. “We spent time in Mexico City and East Los Angeles, immersing ourselves in the vibrant Michelada culture, observing how bartenders and consumers were reinventing this classic drink.”
In addition to new flavor profiles and high-ABV offerings, the brand has also expanded into the moderation space with the January 2026 launch of Modelo Chelada Limón y Sal Non-Alcoholic, one of its most popular flavor profiles. “People want choices without having to compromise, and Modelo Chelada Non‑Alcoholic does exactly that,” says Logan. “Limón y Sal has been the fan favorite in our ready-to-drink Chelada lineup for six years running, so it was the obvious pick for our first non‑alcoholic release. It brings moderation and flavor together, with the authentic sabor that defines the Modelo Chelada product line.”
Bringing the Sabor

Visually and emotionally, the campaign captures a unique vibrancy that feels distinctly Modelo Chelada, showing how consumers bring their own style, personality, and energy to every occasion.“There’s flavor, and then there’s sabor,” says Swathi. “Sabor is that unexpected twist, the little something extra that turns the ordinary into something unforgettable.”
The campaign is dynamic, layered, and unmistakably flavorful; although it’s not just about taste, it’s about inviting people to show up, embrace their identity, and bring the sabor to anything they do.
Leading Through Growth
Modelo Chelada has grown into a robust franchise with broad appeal. Today, the brand holds approximately 70% dollar share of the ready-to-drink michelada segment1 and continues to attract new drinkers while expanding occasions for the category.
“Consumers are increasingly seeking authentic experiences and bold flavors, and Modelo Chelada delivers both,” says Swathi.
That momentum reflects the brand’s ability to evolve while staying true to what consumers love most about the portfolio.

Modelo Chelada is poised for continued growth with new innovations on the horizon, including expanded formats and flavors that unlock new drinking occasions. And while the flavors may evolve, the mission remains the same: to deliver a deliciously bold experience that’s rooted in authenticity and packed with personality.
“There’s so much opportunity in this space,” Swathi shares. “People are curious, open to exploring authentic experiences, and looking for drinks that reflect their personality. Modelo Chelada is uniquely positioned to meet that moment.”
