Constellation Brands Employees Give Back to Chicago Community in Record Numbers

Chicago, Ill., August 30, 2016 – Constellation Brands, the third-largest beer company in the United States, today announced record employee participation in the Beer Division’s annual Summer Service project, which aims to make improvements to a local Chicago Public School in a lower-income, culturally diverse neighborhood. Constellation partnered with Chicago Cares, the city’s leading connector of people, communities and causes through volunteerism, to bring 258 employees to Fairfield Academy elementary school on the Chicago’s south side to update and improve the school’s look and feel in preparation for the coming school year.

Over the course of two days, Constellation employees from the Chicago office and field and national off-premise sales teams worked together to make Fairfield Academy’s environment more conducive to learning, investing more than 1,000 hours total in the school. Employee volunteers built multiple benches, planter boxes and bookcases, painted world and U.S. maps and sidewalk games on the outdoor play lot, painted two stairwells, the main office, reading room and cafeteria hallway, and created a canvas mural of the school mascot, the Fairfield Falcon.

“If the students feel a sense of belonging and take a sense of ownership of their environment, they’re more likely to respect it,” said Claudia Lopez, principal of Fairfield Academy. “Because students now feel respected, the response is to respect not only themselves, but their peers and their teachers. It really has a trickledown effect on the whole environment, the culture of the school.”
